Hey artists! Question time.

[Poll #1727197]

Could you also please explain your reasoning for whatever answer you've chosen? I am curious.

I guess I don't really consider myself an ~artist in the sense that I thought you meant? I've never had a deviant art account but I thought it was just 2D type things, paintings and photoshop and the like.

I post my stuff on Tumblr and Facebook these days when I actually finish stuff though :)

OH HEY the choir is doing a marketplace thing before and after the spring concert for local artists and artisans to set up shop and I totally forgot to mention it to you until now - I can forward you the info if you'd be at all interested but I know you're pretty busy these days.

DA has whole categories dedicated to things like jewellery, so while I guess I could see where you got the idea, you are very mistaken. >_>

What's your tumblr?

Yeah, forward me the info. I probably won't be up for it so soon, but it never hurts to be in the know. Thanks!

Unfort, I don't draw as much as I used to, but I wouldn't post at DA if I did. For one, the community is just *too big* now, so I feel it's lost its appeal of being a "deviant" site. I still watch tonnes of artists on DA, but if I find out they also post elsewhere, I take their DA page off my bookmarks and add their new one.

The second is just kind of on principle? A while back, they were really nasty and insensitive about some gender-related issues. Their response left a really bad taste in my mouth, and I guess it's silly in an age when people don't really boycott things on principle, I can't really continue with such a place!

I just made a huge transition in my life, so I'm hoping having relieved some of my stress, I can get back to drawing... In which case I'll post at my tumblr and other art communities if I find any that appeal to me!

(This is caeline, by the way)

I think I'm going to make myself a tumblr pretty soon. What's yours?
I've definitely found that a lot the business side of DA has left a bad taste in my mouth too - the gender related thing being one such thing, though I was mostly gone from DA when that happened anyway. I find myself missing the art-related friendships I formed there, though - and most other art communities that I've come across are too specialized, too impersonal or just too quick to die off. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

(Yes, I know. I'm glad you hear from again, though. You've been quiet for a while. Especially glad to hear that you're seeming less stressed; I hope the arting goes well!)

Yeah, I was mostly done with DA by then, but was also in the (failed) process of trying to 'restart'. I do miss all my art friends as well, and on one hand, I think the reason I feel out of touch with my art is because of where life has taken me, I think another part is just not having that push and pull you get with being acquainted with people who also make art and surrounding yourself with sources of inspiration.

I'm velleitas on tumblr too, though if I get around to posting art regularly, I'll set up a separate account for that, and visibly tag all my art. I already do that anyway, because I haven't the popularity or distinctive style for someone to tell me when something of mine has been posted without my permission, but I think they're more or less subtle now. Tumblr is kind of .... iffy, in the controlled distribution sense and is very fast paced. I'm just not sure where else to go right now!

sometimes, but rarely. whoops. I want to try and post more, but I just don't actually have the art to post, and the random doodles I DO do I don't think anyone would be interested in, either.

I am a part of 3 different RP-based art communities on there, but I just help mod two so I don't really participate (I'm not a commuinty-RP kind of person), and the most recent one I hope to participate in more because it's smaller and stupider (pokemon).

In general I just don't have too much to post?

I'm kind of sad that a ton of people are flocking over to tumblr, because tumblr is just waaay too hard for me to keep up with because of the way it's set up. I also don't like the fact people can reblog whatever is posted or blog any picture they come across, so some artists tend to have their art circulated around but then the actual artist gets forgotten about.

I didn't realize that was a thing that happened on tumblr. I'm just poking around at it now (cause obviously that's how I should be using my time). Good to know though; if I post my art there, I will note my website on it too. I wouldn't leave LJ for tumblr, that's for sure.

By the way, I haven't forgotten about you. ._. I'll email you hopefully tonight. I've been flaky because I'm feeling slightly braindead.

yeah. My sister's had some of her photos blogged around without any credit, which sucks. if you do post there just make sure you watermark your image well. But I've noticed people rarely really go back to the source.. i dont know, I guess I just dont like the whole "you can post whatever anyone else posts/anything from the internet!" I mean I keep one for my own personal reference that I don't share, it's just a collection of photos that I enjoy, but I credit and always blog from the source, I never re-blog.

its okay! I know you're busy. I've been pretty ugh lately too so it's fine.

I despise DA for several reasons- their lack of interest in cracking down on art theft, their blatant sexism when it comes to male vs. female nudity, the fact that you can have fetish photography running rampant but art done with artistic intent that happens to be sexual too isn't allowed, their blatant money whoring and probably some other issues I've forgotten/haven't come across. All in all, I won't go back to DA even if I haven't completely deleted my account. I keep it just to keep a folder of art tuts and such.

I haven't found a good art site since. I use a couple- tumblr, Y! and here but all of them have their drawbacks.

From: [identity profile] greek-amazon.livejournal.com
Still the double standard on photography, eh? I was never really into the photography scene, but... yes.
I find myself trapped between wanting to interact with the artists there and still finding the "management" frustrating. I haven't decided if I'll go back yet.

You know, I dunno if it's just me, but it seems like it's a lot harder to find good artists on Y! than it was when it started up - and a lot of the ones that I watched appear to have jumped ship. It makes my inclination to become active there kind of limited. I'd delete my account there, but I like having all the sites. All of them. Even if I never use them.

I still post to it...it's easier than updating my website, and gets the most response *shrug* Plus I'm not on anything else art-community wise so it's not like I have options! XD

From: [identity profile] greek-amazon.livejournal.com
Oh god, updating websites? What is that?
Would you say you're still making friends on DA? Or is it more just a way to show your art?

Date: 2011-04-06 05:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] saehral.livejournal.com
Ehh, not so much with the friends. I have made some good business connections for freelancing, but mostly I think of DA as a showcase.

From: [identity profile] greek-amazon.livejournal.com
So here's the next question: Is this how you ALWAYS thought of DA? Or did you USED to make friends there?

Basically, would you say that it's changed?

Date: 2011-04-07 01:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] saehral.livejournal.com
That's how I've always thought of it! I never frequented the forums or joined in memes/events/etc on there. A couple people I began to recognize from comments, and every now and again I'd buy from/sell to other artists on there that I admired, or did art trades...but nothing I'd really consider a "friendship" came out of it. Just kind of mutual artist respect. I did discover some new artists to watch through it though, and still do.

TL;DR The only changes I notice are the interface!

Ah, see, for me DA was as much about the community as it was about the art itself; I made some really awesome friends there, many of whom are still hinging around with me. I fear if I went back it would only be like a weird, expanded portfolio, and I'm not sure how much Id keep up with that. :/

Date: 2011-04-08 06:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] saehral.livejournal.com
Ahh...yeah, totally different from my experience of it XD
How's Tumblr so far? I'm not even sure WHAT it is...seems like it's the new thing, now I'm beginning to wonder if I ought to hop on that bandwagon!

Date: 2011-04-08 12:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] greek-amazon.livejournal.com
It's kind of... well, it's the sort of thing that you won't really see the appeal of until you have one. I don't *think* there are ways to lock it, but it's got these different sections; like one for "journal" entries, and one for photos/pictures and one for quotes you like and so forth, and they all show up in your friends' watchlist. And if you like something on your friend's posts, you can reblog it and share it more.
It's a very public sort of thing, which has both its appeal and its drawbacks. But its definitely neat.

I don't really draw anything outside of work at the moment - which is a situation I'm trying to change as the "artwork" involved in my job is basically all GUI stuff ... coder can't be bothered finding the PSD files for whatever button he wants so sends it to me to change the text. :/ Buuut, I would still use DA, however cannot, as I've been locked out of it, pretty much. I'd had the password saved in my browser and it turned out to not be one of my regular ones when I deleted my cookies ... and, I'd changed my e-mail to one at my personal domain name, and for some reason they say the password reminder messages won't go to "custom" domain names. Though help desk tickets do, mysteriously.

TL;DR: I might use DeviantArt again, but currently don't.

I don't because of school. Instructors still mention it as a moderately relevant place to establish an identity though. Key ones are Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, Youtube, and Vimeo.

But I don't feel like keeping up on DA. Too much noise. Embed yourself into too many communities and you're spending all your times trying to keep up, or monitor your work. I'd also have to wipe my old account clean, and I'd rather just abandon it, and preserve it as an archive.

I have an odd and no-doubt unjustified aversion to flickr that I can't quite explain. I have no idea why. ..but I just broke down and got a tumblr, which actually seems like fun. I wish I had a bit more time to poke around on it.

I made a pact with myself to not care about "keeping up" with my online hangouts, especially not to the detriment of other stuff. At one time it mattered a lot to me, but now it doesn't, really. (I'm not trying to get a job in the field, mind.) So I don't think I'd have that concern. I'd care more if I had a running comic or something, but you know. But what I liked and find myself missing about DA is the community aspect. I made a lot of friends there, and I miss that.

I'd also have to wipe my old account clean, and I'd rather just abandon it, and preserve it as an archive.
And that's why all but three of my pieces are in storage. I know I should wipe it clean, and yet... ...and yet it is an archive. It represents a lot, in its own weird way.

Still there, and I upload to Y! now and then too.
I'd been asked to flounce out by friends way back when but... really I didn't see the point. I guess the question is why you post there; for me, it was ( and still is) the easiest and quickest way of seeing what friends are doing and showing them some of what I'm doing. *shrugs*

As for y!, I'm really ambivalent about it these days. I loved when it started that it was a place to put the things I couldn't really display anywhere else, but I'm over the thrill of it I suppose. There are only so many times a man's bits can flash across your screen before you tire of it. ;)
For some reason it also feels like lately there is very little quality work up - prOn stick figures, anime characters, repetitious poses make up most of it- and their filters have rather slipped. Really not a place for me anymore.

I find that much of my current art I keep personal. When its something that I want to share I put it up on LJ or DA ( or often both); people seem to be enjoying Tumblr, though!

THIS. Yes. THIS SO HARD.
It really seemed that when it was new, Y! had a lot of really talented people there - and yes, while it was nice to have a place for teh prOnz (all three or whatever images I couldn't post to other galleries), most of the draw was the level of talent and friendliness that seemed to be there. But in the past year or more many of the amazing artists seem to have abandoned the gallery and a lot of what I see now is... er... substandard, as you say. There are still good artists there, but you have to really work to find them, and I just can't be arsed.

I just set up a tumblr, and yeah, it actually seems like it's a lot of fun. I don't really have time to poke around at it, sadly, but I want to.

I still have my dA account and tried bouncing back but I haven't posted anything since October of last year. I really wasn't posting a whole lot before then so, whatever. I also don't really have anything to show. =/ It's nice when people actually comment though.

The only places I post art aside from dA is LJ and a site called >a href="http://www.redbubble.com">RedBubble. A friend recommended the site, but I've only kept it so I can keep little more in touch with her (even though she's just as scarce, haha). Anyway, mostly post everything to LJ. I feel way too awkward and self conscious to post any art on Facebook and I don't have Twitter, Tumblr, or whatever you kids use nowadays. XD

But I have two more accounts on DA that I never post to either. XD

I should, Y!G doesn't appreciate my earnest, smutless attempts at 3D. X3 (And I am not making Poser-pr0n just to please them. :PPP)

Anyway most of the reason I stopped using dA is because it doesn't function properly on 64-bit Firefox for Vista. I have no idea why, it's just broken. :P I can still use it on Safari if I need to but that kind of killed the desire to use it very often.

Broken 64-bit dA looks exactly the same but doesn't function. Like you can't leave comments or submit anything or delete messages or interact with it in any way, it just idles until it times out.
